The Skincare Routines That Have Changed My Skin (and My Confidence)

For most of my life, my skin felt like something I was constantly trying to “fix.” Between rosacea, frequent breakouts, dullness, and the fine lines that started creeping in as I got older, it never quite felt balanced.

Now at 40, I can honestly say my skin looks better than it did at 33. This came from consistency, affordable products that actually work, and learning what my skin truly needs.

Aging in Reverse (Yes, Really!)

I don’t believe in chasing perfection—but I do believe in healthy, radiant skin at any age. And somewhere along the way, my focus shifted from covering up my skin to actually improving it.

The biggest changes I noticed:

  • Fine lines softened

  • Overall tone became brighter and more even

  • Redness from rosacea significantly reduced

  • Breakouts became rare instead of constant

What made the difference wasn’t one “miracle” product—it was a combination of gentle, effective ingredients used consistently.

I focused on:

  • Supporting my skin barrier instead of stripping it

  • Incorporating ingredients that promote cell turnover

  • Hydrating deeply (this was a game changer for glow and fine lines)

  • Being consistent rather than constantly switching products

The result? Skin that looks clearer, smoother, and more radiant than it did years ago.

I have always been transparent and will continue to do so. These products and routines have significantly changed my skin. I have also had the following done to my skin:

I have filler in my cheeks, my temples and the line across my neck. I get Botox every 8 to 12 weeks. Getting it in my masseter muscles was a game changer! Occasionally, I get a lip flip. As part of a major sinus surgery, I had to have last year. I also had them shaved down a bump on my nose and refined the tip. Dr. Sam Hahn of @mdfacialplastics did all of the above and I can’t recommend him enough!!

I try to get facials, but I haven’t been very good about it in the last year. I have had BBL and Halo lasers and micro-needling, but all of these only once. I haven’t had one in a year and a half, but I really like VI chemical peels. I get these from @skinlogic in Severna Park. They’re amazing!!

When I get facials, I go to @spainthevalley and see Barbara. She is a wealth of knowledge and treats your skin with so much care.

Be sure when you’re using these products to have a barrier protecting cream on hand. I’ll link my favorites

Weekly Notes

Avoid stacking exfoliants (don’t use acids, peel, and microneedling on the same day)

Hydration and barrier repair are what keep your skin looking youthful long-term

Consistency > doing everything at once

How I Won My Battle with Rosacea

For years, rosacea was the most frustrating part of my skin journey. The constant redness, sensitivity, and unpredictable flare-ups made it feel like I was always reacting to my skin instead of understanding it.

What finally changed everything was shifting my mindset—from trying to fight my skin to actually supporting it.

The biggest turning points for me:

  • I stopped over-stripping my skin. Harsh cleansers and aggressive treatments were only making my redness worse.

  • I focused on barrier repair. Once I prioritized gentle, hydrating products, my skin started to calm down.

  • I simplified my routine. Fewer, more effective products made a huge difference.

  • I paid attention to triggers. Certain ingredients and over-exfoliating were major culprits for flare-ups.

Instead of chasing quick fixes, I focused on consistency and calming my skin—and that’s when I finally started to see real change.

Today, my redness is significantly reduced, my skin feels balanced, and I no longer feel like I’m constantly dealing with flare-ups.

If you’re struggling with rosacea, know this: it’s not about doing more—it’s about doing the right things for your skin.

My Full Rosacea Routine (AM + PM)

Here’s exactly how I use these products together for calm, clear, balanced skin.

1. Cleanse

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Use lukewarm water and gently wash your face with 1–2 pumps.
Pat dry — don’t rub.

Why first: it cleans without stripping, which matters a lot with rosacea.

2. Calm redness

Prequel spray
Spray a light layer over your face after cleansing.
Let it dry for about 30–60 seconds.

Why here: this helps calm heat, redness, and irritation before the rest of your routine.

3. Brighten gently

Vanicream Vitamin C Serum
Apply a small amount after the spray is dry.

Why here: this is your gentler vitamin C step, so you still get brightening without using a harsher form that can aggravate rosacea.

4. Repair and strengthen

KraveBeauty Great Barrier Relief
Apply 1–2 pumps over your face.

Why here: this helps support your skin barrier, which is huge for reducing flare-ups over time.

5. Seal in moisture if needed

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5
Use a thin layer on areas that feel irritated, dry, tight, or reactive.
You can use it all over if your skin is especially angry that day.

Why here: think of this as your comfort blanket step.

6. Protect

EltaMD UV Skin Recovery SPF 50
Apply generously as your last morning step.

Why here: sunscreen is non-negotiable with rosacea because sun is one of the biggest triggers.

PM Rosacea Routine

1. Cleanse

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
Wash gently with lukewarm water and pat dry.

2. Calm skin

Prequel spray
Mist evenly over the skin and let dry for 30–60 seconds.

3. Soothe inflammation

SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule
Apply a few drops and press it in gently.

Why here: this is your calming treatment step and is especially good when your skin is red, hot, or freaking out.

4. Barrier repair

KraveBeauty Great Barrier Relief
Apply 1–2 pumps over the face.

Why here: this helps repair the damage-and-irritation cycle rosacea skin gets stuck in.

5. Lock it in

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5
Apply as your last step, either:

  • all over your face if you’re dry or flaring

  • or just on irritated areas if you don’t need a full layer

Easy order to remember

AM

Cleanser → Prequel spray → Vanicream Vitamin C → Great Barrier Relief → Cicaplast if needed → SPF

PM

Cleanser → Prequel spray → Centella Ampoule → Great Barrier Relief → Cicaplast

A few rosacea rules that matter

  • Use lukewarm, not hot, water

  • Pat products on gently instead of rubbing

  • Let each layer settle for a few seconds before the next

  • If your skin is flaring badly, skip the vitamin C that morning and just do:
Cleanser → Prequel → Great Barrier Relief → Cicaplast → SPF

Flare-up version

When your skin is extra red or stingy:

Morning flare routine

Cleanser → Prequel → Great Barrier Relief → Cicaplast → SPF

Night flare routine

Cleanser → Prequel → Centella → Cicaplast

If you want, I can also turn this into a pretty carousel slide-by-slide format for Instagram or a cleaner graphic like your mockup.
