One of my favorite home decor items to add personality to a space is a throw pillow. I love that you can use throw pillows to bring out different colors in a neutral home, add fun patterns and textures, and of course, provide comfort. Our family room currently has a beautiful sage green sofa. I had so much fun adding even more color to this room with a combination of blue and white patterned pillows. They completely transformed the room and show off my classic and grandmillennial style. Decorating with throw pillows tends to be one of my most asked questions. People are often looking for tips for decorating with throw pillows, wondering what are the best pillow inserts, searching for affordable throw pillows, and wanting help to mix and match throw pillows in their home. In this post, I’m going to answer all of these questions and more!

5 Tips for Decorating with Throw Pillows

There is a lot that can be said about throw pillows, so today I’m going to break it down into my 5 best tips. I’m going to cover the best high-quality pillow inserts, how to mix and match throw pillows and tips for changing your throw pillows for the holidays and different seasons. If you’re someone who prefers to shop curated throw pillow combinations visually, rather than by reading about how to create your own, I’ve got you covered as well! Keep scrolling, because I’m also sharing over 100 of my favorite throw pillows (some under $25!) and 15 curated combinations that look amazing paired together!

  1. Choose the Best Pillow Inserts

I know the struggle of finding the best throw pillow inserts all too well. Some are too fluffy, others aren’t fluffy enough. Some have annoying feathers that constantly poke you, others are made of dingy foam. I tested out 10 different best-selling pillow inserts and found what I believe to be the very best throw pillow inserts. These down feather filled pillow inserts come in many different sizes, have special stitching to help prevent feathers from poking out, and are fairly priced. When choosing pillow inserts, I advise ordering two sizes up from your pillow cover size. This will ensure you have a plump, full pillow. Another tip is to fluff any pillows you receive in the mail in your dryer for 15 minutes with dryer balls before using them, which helps fluff them up.

2. Shop Affordable Pillow Covers Under $25

My second tip for decorating with throw pillows is to shop around and search for affordable throw pillows. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a supporter of anyone who wants to splurge on home decor every now and then. But, I also believe in balance and throw pillows are a great home decor item that you can often save money on. Since throw pillows are sometimes transitioned out season-to-season and changing them is also an easy way to make updates to a room without doing any type of remodeling, I highly suggest first searching for affordable throw pillows. I have curated multiple throw pillow collections under $25, some are as low as $8! And the best part is that these affordable throw pillow covers are just as beautiful as many expensive ones!

3. Mix and Match Throw Pillows Like a Pro

One of my favorite parts of decorating with throw pillows is the ability to mix and match them. Throw pillows allow you to play with different colors, patterns, and textures, which can bring so much personality to a room! I like to choose a combination of two main colors that coordinate with the room and venture out from these. Some of my favorite pillow color combinations are coastal blue and sage green, rose pink and kelly green, classic blue and white, and blush pink and mint green. Once you have established the color combination you’re looking for, then you can add in fun patterns and textures. For example, the shade of blue in a floral pattern could match the blue of a dotted pattern on another pillow. These colored pillows will coordinate well together, even with different patterns. Don’t be afraid to add texture as well, different accents such as these really help bring a space to life!

4. Transition Throw Pillows for Different Seasons

Another reason to shop for affordable throw pillows is because I often find myself wanting to change throw pillows from season-to-season. There are a few different ways to do this. You can shop holiday pillows that go along with different themes, such as Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc. Holiday throw pillows are great if you like to focus on that specific type of decor in your home. Another option, which I love, is decorating with seasonal (rather than holiday) throw pillows. Seasonal throw pillows could include flowers for spring or tartan plaid for winter. They could also be as simple as transitioning the color scheme from season-to-season, such as using blush and sky blue throw pillows for summer and switching to dark greens and navy blue for fall. Transitioning throw pillows like this creates a warm welcome to upcoming holidays and I find it helps get everyone in a happy spirit for a new season!
